Small Academy of Jazz – Ognisko Polskie – Polish Hearth

We are delighted to announce that the Small Academy of Jazz (MAJ) is returning to London! Founded and initiated by Bogusław Dziekański, this unique project has been inspiring and developing young generations in Poland for 40 years.

The Small Academy of Jazz is the longest-running initiative of its kind in Europe, celebrating contemporary music rooted in African American traditions such as blues and jazz. Its long-standing work and achievements have been recognised through numerous studies and publications. The event at Ognisko Polskie – Polish Hearth in South Kensington on Sunday 4 October 2026 will feature an engaging musical presentation and educational session for children and young people aged 8–15. The open-stage format encourages active participation, with plenty of creativity and musical fun throughout. On Saturday 3 October, the Small Academy of Jazz will also be presented exclusively to students at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Polish Saturday School in Wimbledon.

The Academy will be led by acclaimed saxophonist Marek Konarski, who has led numerous MAJ editions in Poland and is widely recognised as an educator and improviser. He will be joined by acclaimed jazz pianist Tomasz Zyrmont and his trio.

This is much more than a performance or a music lecture! Children will meet professional jazz musicians and discover how saxophone, piano, double bass and drums work together to create music live. Through musical demonstrations, clapping, simple rhythm and melody games, improvisation, audience participation and plenty of humour, they will explore the sounds of blues, swing, Latin and groove. They will also discover how musicians communicate and create music together in real time.

No previous musical experience is needed - just curiosity, imagination and a love of music! Participants will have the opportunity to explore improvisation, interact directly with the musicians and discover different jazz styles and repertoire adapted to their age.
